New variants of COVID-19 may appear after the spread of the Omicron strain of the coronavirus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Gebreisus warned at a briefing:
«There is still a long way to go before this pandemic ends, and new options may emerge as Omicron spreads around the world in an incredible way.»
The WHO chief stressed the importance of monitoring and evaluating the situation with new strains of the coronavirus.
Gebreyesus also stressed that although Omicron is not as severe as its predecessors on average, it is wrong to think that it is a mild disease. He noted that those infected with Omicron also caused hospitalizations and deaths.
