Great Victory In Kazakhstan!

A high-profile trial in Kazakhstan, during which they detained and tortured for a year a human rights activist and former honorary consul of Estonia in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ms. Balpyk Bibigul, ended in victory and the triumph of justice.

Balpyk Bibigul has been detained since March 11, 2021. The arrest was made ten days after two surgeries. The CIPDH considers the actions of the staff of the Nur-Sultan SIZO and the investigators of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who prohibited him from any transfer of drugs during the first month of detention, the purest attempted murder. As a result, Ms Balpyk suffered a latent heart attack, injured her spine and struggled to move on crutches.

Each time, the Judicial Collegium of Criminal Courts of the Nur-Sultan City Court, consisting of judges Yergalieva Sh.T., Aktailakova K.A., Slambekova A.K., left unchanged the restraint measure for a person who loses consciousness during the trial.

It was also known and proven that the employees of the Investigative Department of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan were blocking the access of doctors to Ms. Bibigul Balpyk in every possible way. Numerous complaints to the supervisory authorities have remained unanswered. It was obvious that it had been done on purpose. Indeed, at that time, under an unfounded and far-fetched accusation, an illegal seizure of the construction site of the Center of International Organizations, located at the intersection of Akmeshit-Sarayshyk-Turkistan streets in Nur-Sultan , took place.

In September 2021, the situation of the employees of the CIPDH – Ms. Balpyk Bibigul had already crossed all the authorized limits and looked more like military torture, which absolutely does not comply with the provisions of the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan: measures of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of human rights” dated June 9, 2021.

Thanks to the great professionalism shown by the lawyers Mr Askhat Bimbetov, Mr Eduard Shompiev and Mrs Asel Absadykova, as well as the courage shown by the journalist Mr Makhambet Abzhan, who covered this trial in the media, Mrs Balpyk Bibigul was released.

The well-organized work of the defense of Ms. Balpyk Bibul is a good example in the judicial practice of the Republic of Kazakhstan and gives hope to others.
